Nine Inch Nails released Ghosts I—IV last night. I’ve been waiting for Trent Reznor to make a purely instrumental album for a long time now—ever since The Fragile. As much fun as it is to scream along with Trent's (unfortunately often violent) lyrics, I’ve always felt that his strongest work has been his instrumentals (starting with A Warm Place). I was a bit disappointed with With Teeth and Year Zero because there were no instrumentals. Besides, after listening to Still, I’d been hoping that he’d continue heading in a more acoustic direction. Anyway, I’m listening to the streaming samples (waiting for their servers to calm down enough so that I can actually get my download), and it’s really fucking good. Plus, the entire album (including the multi-track files) is being released under a Creative Commons license. Ghosts is glimpse into a possible future, a future without major labels.
