Momus has a great “postmodern narrative analysis” of Sakaki’s dream in the New Year’s episode of Azumanga Daioh.

Azumanga is my favorite anime of all time—my wife and I have watched it all the way through several times now, and we’ve come away with something new every time. Watch it.
